5 Days in Beijing: Day 5

5 Days in Beijing: Day 5 All-day: the Great Wall of China The thing with the Great Wall is there are sections so you will not see all of it.   Here   I am recommending two different sections.   One is the most famous section, that being said it’s best to go when it is not the tourist season.   While the other is a great section as well but not as popular as the other.   Both sections are well preserved or restored and easy for tourists of all ages to explore due to restored steps, cable cars, and pullies. First Option: Badaling If you are coming during the spring or autumn and not on a national Chinese holiday then Badaling is probably the section you want to go to.   Other than those times it is far too crowded for an enjoyable experience.   I went during the Chinese national holiday and it was standing only on the train there and back while I was not able to get on to the wall it's self due to the number of people. ...

5 Days in Beijing: Day 4

5 Days in Beijing: Day 4 The fourth day of your stay in Beijing is sort of the day of southern Beijing.   I sort of but for the most part, you will be sticking pretty close to line 1 on the subway.   If you are a shopper then today will be great for you, if you are not a shopper then you can at least walk around a looking at some cultural stuff. Breakfast: Asian dough stick and soy milk. This is basically how it is advertised at McDonald's and it’s what I am recommending.   I have seen this on the college campuses that I have worked at and around the cities, I have lived in while being China.   All together Seven years at this point, but I will talk about that more in another post. The dough stick is just deep-fried dough and kind of reminds me of elephant ears from carnivals but without the cinnamon and sugar.   And soy milk is milk made from soybeans.   Don’t worry one glass will not upset your estrogen levels.    You can get both toget...

5 Days in Beijing: Day 3

Beijing Day 3 Today you will be heading to the western and eastern side of Beijing.   Covering a lot of ground but don’t worry the subway system will seeing you around easily. Breakfast: Dumplings We have all seen Chinese dumplings.   Little bags of dough with meat and veggies inside.   The Chinese steam them while the Japanese fry and the Koreans make them bigger but still fry them.   Either way, you’re in China so you get them steamed.   Finding dumplings is pretty easy, you just look for the counters that are serving breakfast food.   Normally they have dumplings, jiao zai, cake, bread, and other things that the Chinese choose to break their fast with.   The Chinese like to dip their dumplings into vinegar, it’s not great in my own humble opinion but they like it.   The most popular fillings are mixed vegetables, pork with carrot, and you might find a few others.   A great one that might only be found in Hunan, but if you can find...

Rainy days in Guangzhou

Image
The Rainy Days in Guangzhou Most of the year Guangzhou has beautiful weather.  It is a tropical city by all accounts in Southeast Asia.  That being said there is a rainy season.  The rainy season normally starts at the end of March and beginning of April.  I don't if a warm winter in Guangzhou means a short rainy season or a long rainy season, I don't know I've never bothered to ask.  Nor have I ever tried to the math myself. What I do know is that the rainy season is pretty annoying all around for a couple of reasons.  The first being bad infrastructure, the second being that it never stops, while the third is I seem to continually run into Chinese people and others who seem to either think they are made of sugar or have some great childhood fear of water falling from the sky.  I don't get it. Let's talk/gripe about the infrastructure first.  China has done amazing things in terms of infrastructure as well as what the gove...

Beijing in 5 Days: Day 2

Beijing Day 2 Breakfast Another favorite breakfast means in China is called congee.   It’s just porridge but made from rice.   It comes with different ingredients the most commonly found are plain, as in no ingredients, with different vegetables, and salted pork with preserved egg.   I’ll let you make your own decision on the preserved egg.   I’ve had it but it was so long ago that I don’t remember what it tastes like.   You can find congee just about anywhere, including KFC, McDonald's, and 711.   It’s very popular.   It should only cost a 3-5 RMB for a bowl.   If you go to one of the fast-food restaurants it will cost you more but you will also get some soy milk and deep-fried bread as a combo. Morning In the early morning, I am recommending that you visit the Temple of Earth in northern Beijing.   You can find the temple located outside of Angdinmen station on the MTR.   The temple is located in Ditan Park whic...
